Despite spending much of his time helping negotiate a new CBA with his NFLPA brothers (or, um, getting arrested at casinos), there hasn’t been a ton of talk about Chiefs LB Mike Vrabel retiring.
Yeah, he’s 35 years old and a 14-year veteran. But he started all 16 games last season, and he made 48 tackles. Obviously, he can still play the game at a pretty high level, though he’s certainly begun to slow down.
Yet, one report is claiming that Vrabel might be thinking about leaving behind his playing days. According to College Football Talk, “there’s a very good chance” Vrabel will take a job on the staff of new Ohio State football coach Luke Fickell. Fickell and Vrabel are former roommates from the time they played at Ohio State in the mid-1990s, so from that aspect I guess a move like that would make sense. But is Vrabel, -- who, by the way, will be a free agent -- really done playing?
According to Vrabel last month, the answer is no.
“Luke knows I still have time to play,” Vrabel told reporters at Fickell’s introductory news conference in mid-June.
Obviously, Vrabel has the right to change his mind, and maybe he’s decided he wants to be done with football. But I wouldn’t be shocked to see Vrabel back in a Chiefs uniform next season and not in an Ohio State sweater vest.
